Reflection of Storyboard

Our storyboard consisted of a series of small, hand-drawn images with captions explaining the shots and context underneath. I believe our storyboard does a good job in clearly explaining the structure of our video and order in which the shots we film will be edited into.
While we have an idea of the order in which we will film and edit, we decided to keep our storyboard fairly simple in order to give ourselves creative freedom when it came to actually filming. We were then able to expand on the basic shots we had come up with, and used them mainly as a starting point to go off of.
The voiceover recorded by Phoebe was extremely helpful as it allowed Phoebe to give more explanation for certain shots, for instance what angle it would be from and whether it would be a close-up or mid-shot etcetera.

Music Video - First Plan

This is our very first original plan for our music video, showing corrected lyrics and annotations of our ideas for the narrative, our costumes and specific shots.

Band Logo

Here is our band logo - we decided to stylize it as all lowercase, using a vintage font and bright pink background colour.

Band names

Me and Phoebe discussed many band names, including  "CAKE" - this was originally what we planned to call our band and wanted to create a cake smashing photoshoot around, before deciding on something fits our branding more.

We liked on this name as not only did we want something simple, but a deeper meaning is that cake is something sweet, but stylised with capital letters is implied as being shouted rather than just said, which symbolises how our group is intended to be celebratory of typically "sweet" feminine things (lipstick, glitter, the colour pink) but also have a strong, aggressive edge.

Additionally, through our teacher and further research, I found out that cake is a type of drug - while this was an unintended link, it fits in with our video, which has very psychedelic/trippy shots, and use of a kaleidoscope. Additionally, both mine and Phoebe's performances are intended to come off as slightly deranged, which is a further link.

CAKE was a suggestion I made, and was originally inspired by the line "I want to be the girl with the most cake" from 'Doll Parts' by the riot grrrl band Hole, as well as the song 'Cake' by indie/punk musician FREAK (whose name is also stylised in all capital letters).

However, after realising that we had no imagery or lyrics relating to cake in any way, we changed our name to "CAN'T SLEEP" - again, we decided to stylize it with capital letters.
We decided that this fitted our brand more, as not only do we show a sign in our video that says "I can't get no sleep", but as previously mentioned, we as band member's act in a deranged fashion, and Phoebe's character is given a deliberate messy/sleep-deprived look (smudged makeup, messy hair etc).

Previous names suggested include

Blush
Cake Slice
Lonely Hearts Club

Visual Timeline Of Lyrics

Phoebe created this interactive visual timeline for the lyrics to Spinning Wheel, showing which shots we plan to have at specific times.

Three tracks

I suggested to Phoebe three songs - for each song I had a vision of the aesthetic we would be going for in the music video.

Buzzcut Season - Lorde
For this song I envisioned using light in various ways to create a very neon-inspired, conceptual video. I had a particular idea of using stop motion and makeup to create a sequence in which a painted scene on the main subject's face would move around.
We both eventually decided that while there were some strong ideas we could use, the song itself sounded very stereotypically apathetic and would require a cliché "moody teen" persona, which we wanted to star far away from.

White Teeth Teens - Lorde
This song had similar connotations to Buzzcut Season, in terms of using coloured lighting and stop motion sequences - however, this song also made me think of outdoor shots, such as a teen and her friends on a bus or train, travelling to somewhere like Brighton or Camden.  While I did like this idea, it is quite a cliché concept for a music video, and would not have stood out at all.

Spinning Wheel - Black Honey
Being familiar with the band Black Honey, I knew creating a video for one of their songs would have to be extremely lively to match up to the energy of one of their songs. For Spinning Wheel, I had a vision of using a lot of pink with glitter and sequins. Old television was also a key part of my idea, due to the lyric "television, going insane", and some kind of shot using a kaleidoscope over the lens.

Music video set

A couple of images showing our set and the lighting we are using while filming.
In order to make our set, I ordered pink sequinned from eBay and me and Phoebe (with the help of a classmate) pinned it up in a small room. As this room is painted entirely green, we needed to make sure we covered as much of the walls as possible, and could get good shots without showing the green floor or ceiling.
We then got large pieces of cardboard, glued paper to them and wrote certain lyrics out from the song on them, and cut them out into speech bubble shapes, then stuck them onto the fabric alongside cut outs of girls from magazines.

Since these photos were taken, we have added more magazine cut outs to the bottom of the set after noting that it looked very bare compared to the top half.
